Mission Bridge is a 1,162m long bridge completed in 1973 and is part of Highway 11. It crosses the Fraser River, linking the District of Mission and City of Abbotsford together. In 2012, the Ministry of Transportation awarded the Ground Improvement work to Kani to perform Compaction Grouting work underneath the bridge abutments of the Bridge, and to install seismic drains around the perimeter of the abutments. This work involved:

• Improvement work on 5 abutment/approach piers on the North end
• Improvement work on 5 approaches on the South end
• Monitoring movement of immediate and adjacent structures before and during construction
• Control, treatment and disposal of wastewater resulting from construction
• Preparation of construction areas and restoration upon completion of construction

Compaction grouting is the process where low slump mortar-like grout is pumped into the ground in such a way that it displaces and compacts the soil around the depth of the grouted hole.

Compaction grouting was completed in zones between 49ft to 59ft depth below the bridge abutments, drilling and pumping over 2 million litres of grout into over 100 holes, and installing over 140 seismic drains placed into 10” diameter holes.

Challenges of the project included, but were not limited to:

• Utilizing specialty equipment such as high pressured grout pumps and high volume cement mixers for the construction and requiring specialized staff to complete such work
• Working in limited timelines and durations due to the weather-related restrictions and working in floodplain areas
• Monitoring of bridge structure throughout the Ground Improvement phase
• Working in tight areas with multiple drilling machines
• Ensuring the drilling angle and alignment was 100% accurate to avoid drilling into the existing timber piles

Kani completed the project successfully and the client and consulting engineers were very pleased with Kani’s quality of work. Kani was able to provide solutions to any engineering challenge for this project and was able to complete the work in a timely manner.
