Highlighted Project: Annacis Island Wastewater Treatment Plant Expansion

The Annacis Island Wastewater Treatment Plant is one of our region’s largest wastewater treatment facilities. It receives and treats wastewater from 14 municipalities across the Lower Mainland so that the water can be safely released back into the Fraser River. Being a main artery for Lower Mainland’s wastewater treatment, upgrades were necessary to meet the needs of the growing population and support operations in the event of an earthquake. As part of the expansion work of adding a Solids Contact Tank and six new clarifiers (Clarifiers 13 to 18), Kani installed over 300 tiedown anchors at this facility.

Engineering and construction challenges on this project included, but were not limited to:

Designing the anchor pattern and maintaining specified clearances to avoid the large pipes installed to carry waste and treated materials
Designing the anchor pattern to avoid existing densification stone columns
Modifying the drilling rigs to avoid protruding rebars in newly constructed working areas around the anchor locations
Anchor Testing in areas with limited access and limited room to place bearing beams and plates
Coordinating the drilling, anchor testing, and anchor lock-off activities to suit the client’s timeline

The work was completed in 3 phases in 2018 and the project was completed successfully and on-time. The client, owner, and owner’s consulting engineers were all extremely satisfied with Kani’s quality of work as well as the co-operation and coordination of Kani’s working crews.
